Archimede Seguso for Seguso Vetri d’Arte Thick Glass Wall Sconces, 1940s

A stunning and rare pair of wall sconces designed by Archimede Seguso and produced by Seguso Vetri d’Arte in Murano, Italy, during the 1940s. These exquisite fixtures exemplify Seguso’s mastery of glassmaking — thick, refined, and transparent — paired with elegantly simple metal supports that showcase a rich patina developed over decades of age.

The shades are hand-blown Murano glass with a substantial thickness that gives each fixture a presence beyond mere lighting. The glass displays a very subtle green-yellow hue, a characteristic that often appears in vintage clear Murano due to natural iron content and aging. The surface reveals gentle vertical fluting that animates the glass with soft rhythm and texture, producing rich reflections and luminous depth when illuminated. These ridged forms are signature to Seguso’s studio lighting work of the period, translating craftsmanship into sculptural form.

Mounted atop each glass bowl is a precision-formed brass support with rectilinear arm. The brass has developed an even, warm patina over time — not polished away but left to age gracefully — revealing a rich surface color and tactile quality. The visual interplay between the luminous glass and aged brass creates a sophisticated contrast that feels both timeless and distinctly mid-century.

The sconces are currently wired and functional for European electrical standards. They will require rewiring for use in the United States; any adaptation to U.S. electrical standards is the buyer’s responsibility.
