Charred Cedar Side Table or Stool, Contemporary Yakisugi Technique

This minimalist side table or stool is carved from solid cedar and finished using the ancient Yakisugi technique, a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation dating back over 900 years. Through controlled surface charring, the wood acquires a deep, sculptural presence and a richly tactile surface, where natural grain patterns emerge with striking intensity.

The Yakisugi process carbonizes the outer layer of the wood, creating a protective skin that offers exceptional resistance to water, fire, insects, and abrasion—properties unattainable through conventional finishes. Beyond its functional benefits, this technique lends the piece a powerful visual identity, balancing raw materiality with refined craftsmanship.

Composed of solid cedar blocks assembled with precision, the form is intentionally austere and architectural. The subtle irregularities, fissures, and tonal variations are inherent to both the material and the charring process, and are embraced as part of the object’s character rather than concealed.

Equally suited as a side table, pedestal, or sculptural stool, this piece bridges ancient craftsmanship and contemporary design language.
