Early Noguchi Coffee Table by Herman Miller, First Production, 1950s

An early production Noguchi Coffee Table designed by Isamu Noguchi and manufactured by Herman Miller in the 1950s.

Introduced in 1947, the Noguchi Coffee Table is widely regarded as one of the defining masterpieces of twentieth-century design. Conceived by Noguchi as a functional sculpture, its timeless composition is reduced to only three essential elements: two interlocking sculptural solid ash supports and a free-form thick glass top, achieving a perfect balance between structure, elegance and organic form.

This exceptional example comes from the original furnishings of a private residence completed in the 1950s, where it remained with the same family for decades. According to the previous owner, the table was purchased new during that period and has never left the home until recently.

Although the original Herman Miller paper label had already disappeared over the years, well before the restoration, the table displays all the distinctive characteristics associated with an early Herman Miller production. Its exact proportions, the generous thickness and sculptural quality of the solid ash base, the precision of the joinery, the exceptional craftsmanship and the substantial free-form glass top are all fully consistent with first-generation examples manufactured during the 1950s. Combined with its documented provenance, these elements strongly support its attribution as an authentic early Herman Miller production.

The solid ash base has recently undergone a meticulous professional restoration using a fully conservative approach. Every intervention was carried out with the sole purpose of preserving the original material while enhancing the remarkable natural grain of the ash, which is particularly expressive throughout the entire sculpture-like base. The finish has been applied entirely by hand, respecting the original geometry and preserving the visual depth and warmth of the wood.

The original thick glass top remains in very good vintage condition, showing only light surface wear consistent with careful use and age.

A rare opportunity to acquire one of the earliest and most desirable versions of Isamu Noguchi’s iconic Coffee Table, distinguished by its exceptional provenance, outstanding craftsmanship and beautifully figured solid ash construction.

Conditions: Good vintage condition. Professionally restored with a conservative approach, preserving the original character of the solid ash base. Original glass top with minor age-related surface wear. Herman Miller paper label missing prior to restoration.
