Fernando & Humberto Campana Zig Zag Room Divider Magazine Rack for Edra 2001

An exceptionally rare “Zig Zag” room divider designed by Fernando and Humberto Campana for Edra in 2001.

Far more than a functional furnishing, Zig Zag can be interpreted as a kinetic sculpture: a monumental circular composition whose visual character changes continuously according to the viewer’s position, the surrounding light, and the objects placed within it.

Its large satin-finished metal frame rests on slender tripod supports and encloses an intricate web of translucent violet plastic tubing. The tubes are stretched, wrapped, and interwoven in an apparently spontaneous rhythm, creating a striking balance between density and transparency, order and chaos.

Although physically static, the piece appears to vibrate and move. Seen from the front, it reads as an abstract drawing suspended in space; viewed from the side, its remarkably slim profile nearly disappears. As one moves around it, the intersecting lines constantly realign, generating shifting patterns, depth, and optical movement.

Zig Zag functions beautifully as a room divider, defining space without closing it off. At the same time, its flexible network can be used as an unconventional magazine or book holder. Printed material can be inserted directly into the structure, becoming part of the composition and transforming the piece into an interactive and continuously evolving installation.

With its extraordinary scale and radical use of industrial materials, Zig Zag stands at the intersection of furniture, architecture, and contemporary sculpture. It is a powerful expression of the Campana Brothers’ experimental language and their ability to transform simple materials into poetic, expressive, and highly collectible design.
