Monumental in presence and minimal in gesture, this large marble centerpiece reflects the sculptural rigor and material sensitivity associated with the Italian design language of the 1970s, recalling the work of Angelo Mangiarotti.
Produced by Up & Up in Italy during the 1970s, the piece is carved from a single block of black marble, defined by a bold circular form and a deeply recessed center. The thick, rounded edge creates a strong architectural profile, emphasizing both weight and balance.
The marble features a striking network of natural white veining that runs dynamically across the surface, creating a dramatic contrast against the deep black ground. The interior basin reveals a more matte, subtly textured finish, bearing visible traces of use that enhance its authenticity and tactile quality.
The underside shows a beautifully worked base with concentric tooling marks, highlighting the craftsmanship and the solidity of the material. A partial original label remains visible, with traces of the “Up & Up” mark (see photo).
At once functional and sculptural, the piece works equally well as a centerpiece, vide-poche, or standalone object.
