Museum-Level 1939 Aureliano Toso “Canne” Vase – Signed “Toso Murano”

An extraordinary and historically important Murano glass vase by Aureliano Toso, dating to 1939, showcasing one of the most technically demanding and visually striking glassmaking techniques of the pre-war era: the lavorazione a canne.

This masterpiece belongs to the period when Aureliano Toso was in direct artistic dialogue—and subtle competition—with Gio Ponti, who at the time was experimenting with similar canne compositions at Venini. The present vase embodies the bold innovation of those years: a hypnotic, swirling arrangement of turquoise, red, and white cane threads, creating a dynamic, almost kinetic surface that shifts under natural light. The optical effect is mesmerizing—lines appear to move, twist, and merge, giving the vase an extraordinary sense of motion.

Beyond its spectacular coloration, the vase distinguishes itself through its remarkable thickness and weight, evidence of the exceptional craftsmanship required to maintain structural integrity while manipulating dozens of extremely thin glass rods into a seamless spiral. When illuminated—whether by sunlight or artificial light—the vase projects intricate reflections that dance across surrounding surfaces, a signature characteristic of only the finest canne work.

The shape is elegant and balanced: a rounded ovoid body rising to a subtly pinched, swirling rim that accentuates the rotational movement of the pattern. Every detail—from the tightness of the spirals to the precision of the color alignment—reveals the hand of a highly skilled maestro.

The vase is signed “Toso Murano” on the underside, confirming its authorship and period. Pieces of this quality and date are exceptionally rare, increasingly sought after by museum collections and serious connoisseurs. Comparable works appear in major exhibitions dedicated to the evolution of Murano glass in the early 20th century.
