Pair of Carl Fagerlund Textured Glass Wall Lights for Orrefors, 1970s

A remarkable pair of sculptural wall lights designed by Carl Fagerlund for Orrefors, Sweden, in the 1970s. Elegant, atmospheric and beautifully crafted, these sconces embody the refined dialogue between glass and brass that made Scandinavian lighting of this period so distinctive.

Each light features a thick clear glass diffuser with a deeply molded, organic surface. The glass has an extraordinary tactile quality: part ice, part crystal, part water in motion. Its surface is animated by irregular reliefs, small geometric impressions, rounded textures and softly undulating edges, creating a rich optical landscape that constantly changes according to the light.

When illuminated, the glass becomes the true protagonist. The bulb glows behind the heavy diffuser, filtering through the textured surface and producing a warm golden radiance. Light is broken, softened and refracted in every direction, casting delicate shadows and reflections onto the wall. The result is not only functional lighting, but a highly atmospheric presence, almost like a luminous glass sculpture.

The brass backplates provide a beautiful architectural counterpoint to the organic glass. Their warm tone and natural patina contrast with the clarity of the diffusers, enhancing the depth of the material composition. The brass shows age-related oxidation and surface character, adding authenticity and a quiet vintage richness to the pair.

A particularly charming detail is the use of small star-shaped brass fixing buttons on the front of each sconce. These elements secure the glass to the backplate, but they also become a decorative signature: subtle, graphic and elegant. Their small stellate form creates a refined contrast with the soft, fluid texture of the glass, adding a jewel-like accent to the overall design.

The sconces retain their original Orrefors labels on the reverse, with the indication “Design Carl Fagerlund,” confirming their authorship and origin. The original ceramic sockets are also visible, together with the brass mounting structure and period construction details.

A refined and highly decorative pair of Swedish wall lights, ideal for adding sculptural texture, warm luminosity and a sophisticated Scandinavian accent to an interior. Their strong visual presence makes them particularly suitable for a hallway, bedroom, living room, entrance, or to frame a mirror or console.

Conditions: Good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The brass retains a beautiful age-related patina and the original Orrefors labels are preserved on the reverse. Professional rewiring is recommended according to the electrical standards of the destination country.
