Pair of “Fireside” Chairs by Gio Ponti for Casa e Giardino, Italy, 1939 Design

Sculptural and highly distinctive, this pair of fireside chairs was designed by Gio Ponti and produced by Casa e Giardino, embodying one of the most poetic and recognizable expressions of early Italian modern design.

Originally conceived around 1939 and later produced during the 1950s, the model reflects Ponti’s vision of merging traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics — a philosophy that would define his entire career.

The chairs are characterized by their iconic high ladder-back structure, composed of progressively shaped horizontal slats that create a dynamic, almost architectural rhythm. The slightly splayed uprights and elongated proportions give the silhouette a strong vertical tension, making the piece feel both primitive and refined at once.

Executed in solid walnut, the structure displays a warm, honey-toned patina with a beautifully preserved surface. The seat is made of handwoven natural rush, original to the chairs and intentionally preserved. While it has slightly lost tension over time, this is entirely consistent with age and contributes to the authenticity and integrity of the set.

A distinctive feature of these examples is the construction detail visible on the back: the wooden “button” joints that secure the rear uprights to the seat frame. These rounded elements are not only structural but also decorative, emphasizing Ponti’s attention to honest construction and subtle ornamental restraint.

The low seat height and compact footprint contrast with the dramatic vertical backrest, reinforcing the sculptural presence of the chairs. Originally conceived as “fireside” seating, they were designed more as atmospheric and architectural elements than purely ergonomic seating — a concept aligned with Ponti’s belief that form could exist independently from strict functionality.

Both chairs have been fully restored, with careful attention to preserving original materials and finishes. The wooden structure is in excellent condition, while the rush seats show minor wear and a slight softness consistent with vintage use.

Structurally sound and ready to place.

A rare and highly collectible pair of Gio Ponti chairs, representing an early and emblematic moment in Italian design history — where craftsmanship, architecture, and poetry converge.
