A beautiful and important pair of large Murano glass wall sconces produced by Barovier & Toso in the 1980s, designed with a dramatic wing-shaped silhouette. With their generous proportions, sculptural glasswork and elegant brass structures, these lights perfectly express the decorative richness and theatrical refinement of late 20th-century Murano production.
Each sconce features a large clear Murano glass shade shaped like an open wing, with a dynamic upward movement and a softly curved profile. The glass is richly worked with deep raised ribs that follow the natural rhythm of feathers, giving the pieces a strong sense of movement, lightness and verticality. The scalloped outer edge further enhances the wing-like form, making the sconces appear almost suspended in motion.
The glass itself is particularly refined: thick, clear and highly textured, with a frosted and crackled surface full of tiny internal reflections. This treatment gives the material a shimmering, almost icy appearance while maintaining the depth and brilliance typical of Murano glass. When illuminated, the glass comes alive with a warm, diffused glow, enhancing the relief decoration and casting a soft atmospheric light onto the wall.
The polished brass structures provide a sophisticated contrast to the crystalline transparency of the glass. The round wall plates, curved brass arms and cylindrical lower elements create an elegant architectural support for the sculptural shades. Each sconce is completed by a small clear glass sphere finial, a delicate detail that adds balance and refinement to the composition.
Their large scale gives them a strong decorative presence. Measuring approximately 35 cm in height, 20 cm in width and 15 cm in depth, they are ideal for framing a mirror, console, doorway or bed, while also being powerful enough to stand alone as sculptural wall lights.
The sconces are in very good vintage condition. The Murano glass shades are beautifully preserved, while the brass structures show only light signs of age and use, consistent with their period. The overall appearance remains elegant, bright and highly decorative.
