Pair of Paolo Buffa Armchairs with Undulating Ladder Back in Cherrywood, 1940s

An elegant and sculptural pair of armchairs attributed to Paolo Buffa, emblematic of the refined Milanese design culture of the 1940s. The defining feature is the distinctive undulating ladder back — composed of three sinuous horizontal rails — a motif frequently associated with Buffa’s production of the late 1930s and 1940s, where neoclassical balance meets subtle modern dynamism.

The solid cherrywood structure is characterized by softly tapered legs, gently curved armrests and sculptural side supports with a pierced teardrop motif — a detail recurring in documented examples of Buffa’s seating from the same period. The dialogue between fluid lines and controlled proportions reflects Buffa’s ability to reinterpret historical references with measured elegance and architectural clarity.

The seats have been entirely restored. The rush (paglia) has been meticulously rewoven following traditional techniques and period-appropriate patterns, ensuring historical coherence and aesthetic integrity. The restoration was carried out with respect for the original materials and construction methods, preserving the character and authenticity of the design.

The cherrywood frames have been carefully refinished, enhancing the natural warmth and depth of the grain while maintaining a patina consistent with their age.
