Pair of Venini “Reticello” wall sconces attributed to Carlo Scarpa, circa 1940s

An exceptionally elegant and rare pair of Murano glass wall sconces attributed to Carlo Scarpa, executed in Italy during the 1940s. These refined sconces combine delicate Venetian glass artistry with a rigorous architectural brass structure, reflecting the sophisticated modernist language associated with Scarpa’s early Venetian work.

Each sconce features a handblown reticello glass diffuser with intricate lattimo filigree decoration, created through intersecting white canes embedded within transparent glass. The subtle spiral geometry of the reticello pattern generates remarkable depth and luminosity, diffusing a warm atmospheric light while revealing the extraordinary craftsmanship of the Murano artisans.

The sculptural brass supports present a clean geometric profile that contrasts beautifully with the softness and movement of the glass shades. Their minimalist architectural form emphasizes the balance between material purity and refined craftsmanship characteristic of Italian modern design from the period. The brass mounts have been lightly polished while intentionally preserving traces of their original patina and age.

One diffuser presents an internal filature visible in the photographs, consistent with age and handcrafted production, which does not compromise the structural integrity or functionality of the piece. Both shades also show minor wear and small chips along the outer rims, visible upon close inspection and fully consistent with their age and authentic use over time.

Rare to find as a true matching pair, these sconces are remarkable examples of early Italian modern lighting and mid-century Venetian glassmaking, combining sculptural elegance with exceptional material quality and atmospheric presence.

Wear consistent with age and use.
The fixtures are currently functional but we recommend professional rewiring and installation in accordance with local electrical requirements.
