An exceptionally rare and highly collectible pair of wall sconces designed by Ercole Barovier for Barovier & Toso, Murano, during the 1930s. Signed “Barovier Toso Murano” on the reverse of the solid brass backplate, these sconces represent one of the earliest and most refined expressions of Venetian lighting design, where sculptural form, masterful glassmaking and impeccable metalwork merge into a timeless composition.
Each sconce is conceived as a stylized torch, with a beautifully proportioned solid brass arm supporting an extraordinary hand-blown Murano glass shade. The thick crystal glass is characterized by delicate internal “pullegoso” micro-bubbles, a sophisticated Murano technique that creates a subtle texture within the glass while enriching the diffusion of light. The result is a warm, vibrant glow that highlights both the transparency and remarkable depth of the material.
The gently scalloped rim recalls the petals of an opening flower, while the glass is elegantly framed above and below by finely shaped brass collars with a floral profile. These small yet refined details perfectly demonstrate the extraordinary level of craftsmanship that distinguished Barovier’s production during this period.
Equally remarkable is the sculptural brass support. The torch-shaped stem projects from a geometric rectangular wall plate through a cantilevered arm, creating a balanced composition that feels both architectural and decorative. The brass has developed an exceptional original patina over nearly a century, with rich golden tones alongside natural oxidation and subtle verdigris accents that beautifully testify to the authenticity and age of the pieces without compromising their elegance.
Both sconces remain in excellent vintage condition. The Murano glass presents beautifully with only the minute manufacturing characteristics expected from hand-blown production, including tiny trapped air bubbles typical of early Venetian glassmaking. The brass retains its original finish with honest age-related wear and a remarkable untouched surface that collectors deeply appreciate.
Rarely encountered on the market, this signed pair embodies the refined aesthetic that established Ercole Barovier as one of the greatest innovators of twentieth-century Murano glass. Their sculptural presence makes them equally suitable for sophisticated residential interiors and important collectible design collections.
