An elegant and restrained group that captures the spirit of Italian post-war design, where proportion, lightness and architectural clarity take precedence over ornament. These chairs are characterized by their slender, tapering legs and slightly splayed stance, creating a poised, almost calligraphic silhouette that feels both stable and visually light.
The frames are crafted in walnut, finished in a warm honey-toned patina that enhances the natural grain and depth of the wood. The subtle curvature of the rear legs and uprights introduces a sense of movement, a recurring theme in Gio Ponti’s furniture from the late 1940s and 1950s, where structure becomes line and line becomes rhythm.
The seats are newly upholstered in a refined green velvet, chosen to echo period-appropriate color palettes often associated with Ponti’s interiors. Notably, the upholstery is fixed with a small visible tack, a detail faithfully preserved from the original construction method, underscoring the attention to historical accuracy during restoration.
Completely restored, the chairs are structurally sound and ready for use, while maintaining the elegance and lightness of the original design. Comparable models have appeared in international auctions and specialized collections attributed to Gio Ponti, particularly within the context of his mid-century dining and seating designs produced for private interiors and small series.
