Carlo De Carli Sculptural Writing Desk in Walnut, Italy, 1950s

This desk illustrates De Carli’s organic-structural language. The top, with its sharp outward corners, transitions into an apron that flows seamlessly into four tapered, splayed legs. The joints are resolved through continuous curves, giving the piece a fluid appearance. At the center, a drawer is discreetly integrated into the fascia, maintaining the unity of the overall volume.

Recently finished with a hand-rubbed shellac, the surface shows a luminous depth and a refined, period-appropriate sheen. Light, honest signs of age are present. On the back there is a discreet, professional repair at an old knot that had opened over time—stable and well executed.

Designer note
Carlo De Carli (1910–1999) was a pivotal Italian architect and educator. A Politecnico di Milano graduate (1934), he later taught and served as Dean, shaping generations of designers with a focus on the interplay of space, material and the human body. After an early collaboration with Gio Ponti, he established his own studio; his innovative work was taken up by leading Italian manufacturers, bridging craftsmanship and industry.
