A rare and highly atmospheric Fun 2TM table lamp designed by Verner Panton, dating from the late 1970s.
One of Panton’s most poetic lighting designs, the Fun series transforms a simple light source into a living, moving sculpture. This table version is composed of a chromed metal structure with three circular tiers, from which hundreds of “faux” natural mother-of-pearl capiz discs are individually suspended by small metal rings. The result is a delicate curtain of translucent shells, constantly shifting with the light, the air and the viewer’s movement.
The beauty of this lamp lies in the extraordinary materiality of the discs. Each shell element is naturally different, with pearly ivory tones, warm cream reflections, subtle golden shades and visible organic veining. When illuminated, the lamp glows from within, creating a soft amber atmosphere while the mother-of-pearl reflects and filters the light in a wonderfully sensual way. Even when switched off, it remains a sculptural object of great decorative presence.
The structure is elegant and architectural: a circular chrome base, a central stem and two upper rings create the support for the cascading shell elements. The lamp is signed at the top with the Verner Panton mark, a beautiful and important detail confirming the design.
The proportions are ideal for use on a side table, console, bedside table or low cabinet, where the lamp can become both a source of light and a focal point. Its 28 cm diameter gives it presence without being excessive, while the 42.5 cm height allows the layered shell composition to be fully appreciated.
