Monumental Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte Rare 7-Light Glass Sconces, 1950s

An important and exceptionally rare pair of seven-light wall sconces by Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte, Italy, 1950s.

These striking architectural appliques perfectly embody the poetic modernism and material sophistication that defined Fontana Arte’s post-war production. Each sconce is structured around a monumental shield-shaped backplate in thick azzurro / verde “Nilo” glass — the subtle blue-green tone so characteristic of Fontana Arte. The glass presents a delicate aquatic nuance, visible along the polished edges and intensified by light, creating a refined chromatic halo against the wall.

The backplate, elongated and gently pointed at both ends, acts not merely as support but as a luminous architectural surface. Its thickness and clarity enhance reflections of the brass structure, amplifying depth and dimensionality. Both glass panels are in excellent condition, free of chips or cracks.

Mounted in front of this translucent field rises an elegant brass framework with seven scrolling arms. The brass retains a beautiful original patina, warm and nuanced, with natural oxidation consistent with age. The patinated surface contrasts exquisitely with the cool Nile glass and the luminous white diffusers.

Each of the seven light points is crowned by a stylized white enameled metal flower. These floral elements are finely cut with petal-shaped edges, forming delicate corolla silhouettes. The petals open upward like abstracted lotuses, encircling the bulb and filtering the light. When illuminated, the flowers glow from within, casting soft radial shadows and multiplying reflections across the glass panel behind them. The result is both sculptural and atmospheric — a vertical bouquet of light suspended within glass.

The floral motif, refined yet graphic, recalls Chiesa’s ability to reinterpret decorative themes within a disciplined modern vocabulary. The branching brass arms create a rhythmic upward movement, reinforcing the botanical character while maintaining architectural balance.

The sconces have been professionally rewired to comply with modern safety standards. They now use warm light LED G9 bulbs, ensuring practical contemporary use while preserving the original aesthetic. The electrical system has been updated discreetly without altering the historical integrity of the pieces.
