Pair of Large Murano Sconces by Archimede Seguso for Seguso Vetri D’ Arte, 1940s

An exceptional and highly sculptural pair of wall sconces designed by Archimede Seguso and produced by Seguso Vetri d’Arte during the 1940s. These rare fixtures embody the refined dialogue between Murano glass artistry and sophisticated Italian mid-century metalwork that distinguished Seguso’s production in the immediate post-war period.

The design is centered around a remarkable cantilevered brass support, whose sharply articulated profile forms an elegant zig-zag geometry projecting from the wall. Rather than employing a conventional curved arm, Seguso conceived a dynamic angular bracket that appears almost architectural in character, creating a sense of tension and balance between the wall plate and the suspended glass element. The arm culminates in a slender black-lacquered tapered finial, lending the composition a distinctly modernist silhouette while emphasizing the verticality of the shade.

The generously scaled shades are executed in thick hand-blown pulegoso and textured Murano glass, featuring a flared trumpet form with softly scalloped rims. The surface combines pronounced vertical ribbing with a richly irregular hammered texture that diffuses light beautifully, creating a luminous crystalline effect when illuminated. The glass displays the characteristic organic depth and subtle optical distortions associated with the finest Murano craftsmanship of the period.

When lit, the textured glass transforms into a glowing lantern-like volume, casting warm atmospheric light while revealing the intricate relief of the hand-worked surface. The combination of substantial glass, aged brass, and black accents results in a sophisticated aesthetic that bridges Venetian craftsmanship and early Italian modernism.

A rare and decorative pair that exemplifies Archimede Seguso’s ability to elevate functional lighting into sculptural art objects.
