An impressive pair of sculptural wall lights produced in Italy by Mauritius in 1977, each example bearing the original Mauritius stamp together with the 1977 production mark.
Entirely crafted in solid cast brass, these substantial sconces weigh approximately 6 kilograms each, a remarkable indication of the quality and quantity of material employed. Unlike the lightweight brass-plated productions of the period, these are genuine architectural objects whose presence is immediately perceived both visually and physically.
Their composition is built as a sequence of turned volumes and floating circular discs, creating a refined interplay of light, shadow and proportion. The design recalls the decorative classicism that characterized many of the finest Italian brass productions of the late 1970s, where historical references were reinterpreted through cleaner, more geometric silhouettes.
One particularly charming original detail is the faux wax candle positioned beneath each socket. Rather than simply supporting the bulb, it recreates the appearance of a traditional candle rising from the brass body, establishing a subtle dialogue between centuries-old candlelight and the electric illumination of the modern era. It is an elegant theatrical element that softens the architectural character of the brass structure while remaining entirely authentic to the original design.
Both sconces retain their original cylindrical linen shades, preserved in remarkably good vintage condition. The natural woven fabric gently diffuses the light, producing a warm, intimate glow while beautifully complementing the rich golden tones of the aged brass. Their restrained geometry perfectly balances the sculptural complexity of the bases.
The brass has developed a beautiful natural patina over nearly five decades, with slight tonal variations and gentle signs of age that enhance the authenticity of the pieces rather than detract from them. The original finish has never been over-polished, allowing the metal to retain its depth and character.
These fixtures are equally suited to sophisticated residential interiors, boutique hotels, libraries or hospitality projects, where their substantial proportions and quiet elegance create an immediate focal point without overwhelming the surrounding architecture.
