Pair of Wall Sconces “Torcello” for Venini, 1940s

An elegant and highly sculptural pair of Venetian wall lights composed of finely worked torcello glass shades mounted on patinated brass supports. The flared, trumpet-shaped diffusers are executed in clear glass with dense, diagonal incised striping, creating a refined optical vibration that subtly filters and refracts the light. When illuminated, the glass produces a warm, diffused glow; when unlit, it reveals the remarkable precision of the linear decoration.

The form — a soft conical flare with gently everted rim — reflects the poetic rigor characteristic of refined Venetian glass production from the 1930s and 1940s. The design language, glass treatment, and metal detailing demonstrate a sophisticated exploration of surface texture, transparency, and controlled geometry typical of high-level Murano craftsmanship of the period.

Each glass shade rests on a distinctive brass arm terminating in a round wall plate. Beneath the glass sits a refined floral-shaped brass collar (ghiera a fiore), an exquisite decorative and structural detail that softens the junction between metal and glass — a solution emblematic of fine Venetian production. The brass retains its original patina, with warm oxidation and surface variation that enhance the historical authenticity of the pieces.

The cylindrical brass arm projects horizontally from the circular backplate, creating a balanced cantilever composition. The mounting plates display original slotted screws and consistent aging. The overall dialogue between the cool linearity of the glass and the aged warmth of the brass exemplifies the refined material contrast central to mid-century Venetian lighting.

The sconces are currently wired and functional for European standards. They require rewiring for use in the United States; any adaptation to U.S. electrical standards will be at the buyer’s expense.

No visible cracks or structural defects to the glass; minor wear and patina to the brass consistent with age and use.

A rare and architecturally composed pair of Venetian sconces from the 1940s, embodying understated sophistication and material intelligence characteristic of the finest Murano production of the period.
