Cabinet designed by Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen for Søborg Møbelfabrik in 1956, a beautifully crafted example of Danish mid-century modernism
Constructed from solid teak, the cabinet features a refined architectural form with perfectly balanced proportions and subtle details such as integrated circular finger-pull handles and exposed dovetail joints—a testament to the designers’ devotion to artisanal integrity and structural honesty.
The cabinet opens to reveal a thoughtfully organized interior: three shallow trays with sculpted hand grips and internal dividers, complemented by two spacious lower shelves. Elevated on finely tapered legs, the piece appears visually light, despite its robust structure.
Provenance:
Acquired from a private residence in Italy, this piece retains its original Søborg Møbelfabrik manufacturer’s stamp on the rear panel, as well as the mark of American importer John Stuart Inc., distributor for the United States and Mexico. It is a curious and delightful discovery to find such a piece in Italy, one can’t help but imagine the cabinet’s journey over the decades, moving between continents and interiors, quietly collecting stories in each setting.
