A rare and highly refined sideboard attributed to Pier Luigi Colli, an exceptional example of Italian craftsmanship where material richness and architectural rhythm converge into a balanced, sculptural composition.
Executed in oak and walnut, the piece is distinguished by its elegant contrast of tones and textures: the warm, vibrant grain of the wood is punctuated by refined parchment panels framed in dark wood, each centered by finely worked brass hardware. The interplay between these materials creates a sophisticated visual cadence across the façade.
The central section features a pair of doors with horizontal parchment insets, flanked by additional compartments articulated with vertical panels, all unified by a rigorous yet fluid design language. Above, smaller drawers with delicate ring pulls and key escutcheons introduce a subtle layer of functional detail.
Particularly noteworthy are the sculptural corner elements, where the structure resolves into fluted, carved vertical bands — a “grissinatura” motif — that soften the transition between front and sides, descending seamlessly into tapered solid wood legs. This detail reflects Colli’s ability to merge decorative refinement with structural clarity.
The sideboard has been fully restored, preserving its original character while enhancing the depth and warmth of the materials. It presents minor, honest signs of age, as visible in the photos, which contribute to its authenticity and charm. On the back, there are remnants of the original transport label, bearing traces of the company for which the piece was designed.
Produced by Fratelli Montina, Brescia, one of the most important Italian manufacturers active in the mid-20th century and closely associated with leading designers of the period.
An elegant and rare piece, embodying the refined eclecticism and material sensitivity that define Pier Luigi Colli’s work.
