This rare and iconic table features a gold leaf-covered wooden top with embossed bird tracks across the surface. It rests on two sculptural solid brass legs, shaped like bird feet.
The design was first presented by surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim in 1939 at the Parisian Galerie René (Artist), in an exhibition dedicated to surreal and fantastical furniture. In 1972, Italian design pioneer Dino Gavina collaborated with Oppenheim to bring the table into production for Studio Simon’s legendary Ultramobili collection.
Unlike current reissues, this original early edition (dated 1973 by the previous owner) is distinguished by its heavier brass legs, which provide greater stability, as well as a richer gold leaf finish and high-quality wood. Entirely handcrafted, these early productions reflect the exceptional artisanal standards of the period.
