Set of Three Model 1222 Wall Lights by Elio Martinelli for Martinelli Luce, 1979

An exceptionally rare set of three Model 1222 wall sconces designed by Elio Martinelli for Martinelli Luce in 1979, an elusive lighting design that is virtually impossible to find on today’s market.

Unlike Martinelli Luce’s better-known productions, the Model 1222 has remained almost absent from publications and the international design market, making surviving examples—especially as a complete matching trio in untouched condition—an extraordinary opportunity for collectors of Italian Radical and Space Age design.

Each sconce is composed of a generous hemispherical diffuser in glossy white plexiglass, elegantly contrasted by a concentric ribbed reflector that transforms the emitted light into a soft, atmospheric glow. The result is both sculptural and architectural: even when switched off, the lamps read as minimalist wall objects, while illuminated they create a sophisticated interplay of reflected light and shadow that expands gently across the surrounding surface.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the design is its versatility. Although originally conceived to be installed with the diffuser facing upward—allowing the light to bounce softly onto the wall and ceiling to create an intimate ambient atmosphere—the fixtures can also be mounted upside down. In this configuration they provide a more direct yet still beautifully diffused illumination, making them particularly suitable beside a reading chair, in a bedroom, hallway, or hospitality interior.

With a diameter of 40 cm and a projection of 41 cm, these are impressively scaled wall lights that command attention without overwhelming a space. Their restrained geometry perfectly reflects Elio Martinelli’s vision of reducing form to its essential elements while achieving maximum visual impact through proportion, light, and material.

This set comes from an old Martinelli Luce warehouse stock and remains in exceptional mint, pristine condition. The lamps have never been installed, preserving their original finish and presenting an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire authentic New Old Stock examples of a scarcely documented Martinelli design.

An important and highly decorative trio that combines rarity, sculptural presence, and the timeless elegance of late Italian modernism.
