Pair of Tomaso Buzzi for Venini Murano Glass Sconces Green Gold, 1940s

An exceptionally refined pair of wall sconces designed by Tomaso Buzzi for Venini during the 1940s, embodying the architect’s unmistakable ability to translate classical elegance into modern Venetian glass.

Each shade is hand-blown in thick cased Murano glass with a beautifully restrained bell-shaped silhouette, where the purity of the form becomes the true protagonist. The glass reveals a delicate celadon green tone that gradually softens toward a luminous milky white body, enriched by an extraordinary internal “sporcato d’oro” decoration. Thousands of fine suspended gold particles shimmer beneath the surface, giving the glass remarkable depth and an ever-changing appearance as the light passes through it.

When illuminated, the shades transform completely: the warm glow diffuses through the cased glass while the subtle green rim remains visible, creating an atmosphere of exceptional softness and sophistication. Even when switched off, the gold inclusions catch the ambient light, making the sconces sculptural decorative objects in their own right.

This particular and highly desirable version is mounted on solid brass wall brackets that have developed a magnificent original patina over more than seventy years. Their restrained geometric design provides the perfect counterpoint to the organic softness of the hand-blown shades, resulting in an elegant balance between architecture and craftsmanship that is characteristic of Tomaso Buzzi’s finest lighting designs.

The quality of the Venetian workmanship is evident in every detail—from the perfectly balanced proportions of the shades to the richness of the cased glass and the subtle irregularities that reveal their entirely handcrafted production. These are pieces that effortlessly bridge Art Deco refinement and the emerging Italian modernism of the post-war period.

An increasingly rare collector’s pair, ideal for sophisticated interiors where understated luxury, historical significance, and exceptional Murano craftsmanship are equally appreciated.
